The Platteville Thrift Shop began 36 years ago when five women from the Church Women United board discussed the need for a way to repurpose gently used clothing. After exploring options, including using their garages, they established an organization called "Concerned Church Women of Platteville." Supported by several churches, they started in a rent-free basement room at City Hall with only $200 in funds.
The shop opened on April 27, 1973, run entirely by volunteers, and earned $38.13 on its first day. It later moved to various locations, eventually purchasing its current property in 2000. Over time, the shop grew significantly, hiring employees alongside volunteers and seeing daily revenues exceed $1,000 by 1998.
The Platteville Thrift Shop's success is attributed to its loyal volunteers, generous donors, and strong community involvement. By recycling clothing and household items, the shop not only provides affordable goods but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Its ongoing commitment to giving back to the community ensures that it remains a cherished institution in Platteville.
